Hey Kids,Let me take you on a little trip down punk rock memory lane to another time (1983) and place (Pomona, CA). Back in these caveman days, we didn't have the modern day luxury of CDs, Mp3s, DVD's, websites, and e-mail. Epi-Fat punk was not marketed at the shopping mall. We put punk records on turntables, dammit!! Finding punk records wasn't that easy either. If you were lucky enough to live near a big city you might have a record store with a new wave section, where you might find a Cramps or Black Flag 7'' amongst the Depeche Mode imports. If you were in the suburbs or in the sticks, you had to search for punk music through mail-order catalogs or by writing to addresses in fanzines, affixing stamps to envelopes and waiting for a reply. No search engines and instant gratification. Instead of being the cool kid in high school with the piercings and colored hair, you were the social outcasts despised by FM rock-loving long-haired rednecks who would heap verbal (and some physical) abuse on you just forwalking down the street. Punk shows were publicized by word of mouth of flyers. There were no computer-trained graphic designers, it was a world of original art or cut'n'paste collages with rub'n'npeel letters put on a page and handed to you out at a show. As a teen surviving the mundane '70's era of rock star worship at stadium-size altars, hearing the records and seeing live punk rock music was a liberating burst of excitement and energy that was an overdue and welcome change of pace. I had served my time in the service (food) and various odd jobs, and was looking for a way to work for myself at something I could actually enjoy doing. Somewhere between working as an ice-cream truck vendor and a clerk at a smoke-shop, I went to my first punk show in Chinatown in 1979. I promptly cut my hair and made the drive from the 'burbs of Pomona to the "big city" several times a week to see shows.
Eventually,I found a few suppliers for buttons, import records, leather wristbands and posters. Talked the owner into letting me try my hand at selling a few records in the back room of the smoke shop, but the experiment didn't last too long, as the profits were dismal compared to water-pipe sales. Believing I hada chance at filling a void left by regular record stores, I found myself a low-rent corner shop down the street and called it Toxic Shock. I realized to survive I would need to find more customers than curious locals, so I ventured into putting together a mail-order catalog and mailing it out to people who responded to classified ads I place in Rolling Stone, Creem and Troser Press. It was my future wife and partner in crime, Julianna (who I met at the store) that helped me get seriously organized. -- Bill Sassenberg --
