California Guitar Trio - White Water

This release by former members of Robert Fripp's League of Crafty Guitarists is filled with both virtuosity and sensitivity. Each member of the ensemble listens and plays well with each other, creating a rich musical sympathy. Various styles of music commingle on this album. For example, there is the delicate baroque-influenced piece, "Prelude Circulation BWV 988." This work simulates the sounds of a harpsichord as the ensemble weaves together a myriad of circular counter melodies.

Other tracks such as "Led Foot" and the title track, "Whitewater" are more complex, angular, and even percussive. Then there is "Cosmo Calypso," a playful tune that invokes the feel and style of Caribbean music. The final track on the album is an intense arrangement of Eddy Arnold's country classic "Ghost Riders in the Sky," which morphs into the Doors classic "Riders on the Storm." The California Guitar Trio moves vigorously through the song's melody, transforming the western ballad into a turbulent gallop. Overall, WHITEWATER unfolds in exciting and often unexpected ways and the trio creates a musical environment that transcends the perceived boundaries of the guitar itself.Live Recording

Any group that can successful put Bach's "Toccata and Fugue in C# Minor" onto 3 acoustic guitars has got to be special - but then they move to a western style on "Train" and an incredibly rocking "Good, Bad, and Ugly". But the true gem is "Up in the Clouds" - A cross between Pink Floyd and Vangelis, or King Crimson and Enya? No comparison does it justice, but it is moving. A masterful disc.

California Guitar Trio - Pathways

The California Guitar Trio was formed by Bert Lams, Hideyo Moriya and Paul Richards. All three perform acoustic guitar, on this CD, in unedited live studio performances. This 1998 recording is their third work together as a trio, after the 1995 disc "Invitation" and 1993's "Yamanashi Blues". Before their formation as a trio, Bert, Hideyo and Paul had previously appeared in various configurations of The League of Crafty Guitarists and had also served as three of the five members of the Robert Fripp String Quintet.

On "Pathways", a significant level of performance maturity is clearly in evidence. Thankfully, such maturity has been assigned to a repertoire consisting of classical arrangements along with original, intelligent progressive compositions that match well to their classical sensibility.

In addition to the guitar trio configuration, a number of tracks include saxophone played by Bill Janssen and Roger Lambson. The touch tapped Warr Guitar, performed by Trey Gunn, is included on a few of the tracks as well.

"Pathways" will serve as a beautiful introduction to the work of the California Guitar Trio. It showcases some of the finest examples of their warmly sensitive musical expression.

Kevin R. Gallagher is recognized as one of America's leading guitarists. He began playing rock guitar in his formative years but his musical appetite quickly led him to study jazz and ultimately, classical guitar. His talent for the classical guitar won him numerous scholarships and awards while studying with Benjamin Verdery at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, and at the Julliard School under the tutelage of Grammy-winning guitarist Sharon Isbin. He was the first-prize winner in 1993 Guitar Foundation of America, the 1994 ASTA, and the 1993 Artists International Competitions. He also has the distinct honor of being the only American classical guitarist ever to win first prize in the prestigious Francisco TÃ¡rrega Guitar Competition in Spain (1997).

After his studies at Julliard, Mr. Gallagher gave many classical guitar performances and masterclasses throughout the world including countries such as Spain, Germany, Sweden, Greece, Turkey, Brazil, England, and the United States. Since 1995 he has been the classical guitar instructor at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin. Kevin has recorded four classical guitar albums, with this album being hailed as "one of the very best NAXOS guitar recordings" by Classical Guitar Magazine in May of 2000.

Information

Nick D'Virgilio is an American drummer and singer, also known as "NDV". Perhaps best known as a member of the progressive rock band Spock's Beard, D'Virgilio took over lead vocals in 2002 and has since recorded three studio CDs: Feel Euphoria, Octane, and the self titled Spock's Beard. In addition, they have released the live CD Gluttons For Punishment and the newly released live DVD Spockâs Beard Live. He was also one of two drummers chosen to replace Phil Collins in Genesis on the Calling All Stations album. While living outside of LA, he continues to do sessions and tours with many artists including Tears for Fears, Kevin Gilbert, Jonatha Brooke, Eric Burdon, Mike Keneally, and Fates Warning.

A Nashville-based recording engineer/producer and a Los Angeles-based performer have teamed up to create a unique twist on a classic Genesis album. This fall, Nick D'Virgilio of Spock's Beard fame and engineer/producer Mark Hornsby re-recorded the Genesis classic The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, in its entirety. Produced at Java Jive Studio in Nashville, the album features some of Music Cityâs best musicians, taking the songs in a whole new direction.

"We wanted to see what would happen if we exposed the songs to a different climate of musicians," says D'Virgilio, "The early Genesis recordings are so musical and very bluesy when you get right down to it. They really lend themselves to some different interpretations."

Although all of the original elements of the songs are still included such as drums, bass, guitar and piano, the recordings now take on a more "theatrical" vibe. This, coupled with orchestra, rock guitars, and some fantastic horn arrangements, the songs now enter an entirely different place.
